Inmate Knocks Out Corrections Officer With Metal Object At Central Mass Prison

A Massachusetts Correctional Officer was seriously injured after they were attack by an inmate with a metal object at a Shirley prison, officials said.

The attack happened in the gymnasium of MCI-Shirley around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, a spokesperson with the Department of Correction told Daily Voice. 

The inmate was immediately detained by other staff and later removed from the general population, the spokesperson said. The officer, who was rendered unconscious, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. 

The inmate will also complete an internal discipline process, the spokesperson said. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office has been informed about the attack, which remains under investigation.
